The IUTAM Symposium on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV2) will follow the spirit set in the 1992 IUTAM Symposium on Bluff-Body Wakes, Dynamics and Instabilities, held in Göttingen, Germany, and more recently in the Forum on Advances in the Understanding of Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV1), which was part of the 1998 ASME-FED Summer Meeting in Washington, DC, USA.
BBVIV2 will focus on aspects of the dynamics of vortex structures found in the wakes of fixed and oscillating bluff bodies, including vortices resulting from shear layer convective instability and near-wake absolute instability. Experimental, computational and analytical studies will be presented on topics such as the following (not exhaustive):

Active and passive control of wakes
Aspects of vortex-induced vibration of bluff bodies
Dynamics and wake structure for both 2D and 3D body geometries
The three-dimensional structure of wakes from nominally two-dimensional bluff bodies
Mode changes in the wakes of circular cylinders
Bodies in unsteady/oscillatory flows
The relation between wake structure and the force experienced by a bluff body

The Symposium will take place on four days, starting on Tuesday, 13 June 2000, at 2 pm and ending on Friday, 16 June 2000, around 5 pm (there will be no sessions on Thursday afternoon). It will consist of single plenary sessions with invited lectures (40 minutes), oral presentations (20 minutes),and poster presentations (3 minutes).

The final time schedule of the presentations is now available - it can be downloaded in different formats.

Accepted Abstracts

The response to the Call for Abstracts was quite overwhelming: by the deadline of 07 February 2000, a total of 90 abstracts had been received. The selection of presentations at the conference, based on the evaluations by the BBVIV2 Scientific Committee, had to be strict, due to the limited number of “slots”, and was not an easy task. In all, 41 submissions were accepted as oral presentations, and 32 more as poster presentations. The links below give the lists of all accepted abstracts, including the current status of the presentations (confirmed or cancelled).

At the meeting, a Book of Abstracts containing the summaries of all presentations will be distributed to the participants. A number of selected oral presentations will be chosen by the Scientific Committee for further submission to a special issue of the Journal of Fluids and Structures, to appear after the Symposium.

07 February 2000:   Abstract deadline
19 March 2000:   Notification of acceptance to authors
15 May 2000:   Registration deadline
13-16 June 2000:   Symposium dates
15 August 2000:   Due date for final manuscripts of selected papers

Location & Accommodation

The Symposium will be held at the Hotel "Vacanciel La Calanque" in Carry-le-Rouet, a small village of the "Côte Bleue", approximately 30 km west of Marseille on the Mediterranean Sea. Images of the Symposium site can be found here, and travel information on how to reach the hotel is given here. Full board and lodging will be available to all participants at the Symposium site. We highly recommend staying at this holiday resort, because of its pleasant location and for convenience. It is not planned to organise daily shuttle buses between the Symposium site and other hotels or downtown Marseille. Reservations at this hotel will be handled by the Organising Committee at the time of registration. Please do not contact the Hotel Vacanciel directly. Enough rooms have been retained to accommodate everyone.

The hotel offers private beach access, as well as leisure and sports activities, to participants and accompanying persons. Excursions to nearby sites of the Provence can be organised either through the hotel or the Symposium Organising Committee, depending on the number of interested people.

Accommodation fees per person (FF: French Francs; EUR: Euros)

3 nights (13-16 June) Single room 930 FF / 142 EUR
Double room (*) 720 FF / 110 EUR
4 nights (12-16 June) Single room 1240 FF / 189 EUR
Double room (*) 960 FF / 146 EUR

These rates include room, breakfast and dinner.

It is possible to book additional nights at the Hotel Vacanciel before and/or after the Symposium. These reservations are also handled by the BBVIV2 Organising Committee, but the corresponding extra charges must be paid, in French Francs only, directly to the Hotel during the stay (no advance payment is necessary). Off-conference rates per night are: 435 FF / 365 FF per person for a single/double(*) room and full board; 400 FF / 290 FF per person for a single/double(*) room, including breakfast and dinner only. Availability of off-conference rooms is limited, reservations should be made as soon as possible.

Those who do not wish to stay in Carry-le-Rouet are kindly asked to make their own reservations (for help you can contact the Marseille tourist office here).

(*) Double room rates obviously only apply when two people share (and pay) the room.

Symposium registration fee (FF: French Francs; EUR: Euros)

before 15 May 2000 1000 FF / 152 EUR
after 15 May 2000 1200 FF / 183 EUR

The registration fee includes 4 lunches, coffee breaks, the Book of Abstracts, a copy of the Proceedings published in a special issue of the Journal of Fluids and Structures, and the Thursday evening banquet, to be held at the restaurant "Les Trois Forts" at Le Pharo, overlooking the Old Port of Marseille.

To register, please fill in the registration form, available in different formats, and send it, together with your payment, either by e-mail, fax, or normal mail to the BBVIV2 Organising Committee at the address give below. Methods of payment are detailed here.

Registration forms:

The following audiovisual equipment can be made available to authors of oral presentations: a second overhead projector, slide projector, video projector (VHS – PAL, SECAM, NTSC), computer monitor projector. Please indicate your needs on the registration form.

Financial Support

Limited funds will be available for partial financial support for students, young scientists and/or scientists from Eastern European, Latin American and Northern African countries, when insufficient financial support is available from their institutions. Financial support will generally consist in reducing and/or waiving the registration and/or accommodation fees. If additional support for travel is granted, the corresponding amount will be paid to the participant in cash (French Francs only) at the conference (or via bank transfer for French residents), after providing original airfare or train tickets or ticket receipts. Advance payment is not possible.

Applications for financial support should addressed to the Organising Committee in a separate statement, specifying the amount requested, together with the registration form.
